The first photographer commissioned by theAustralian government during World War llwas Damien Parer(1912-44).He servedbehind the lens in the Middle East and NorthAfrica, before joining western forces in NewGuinea in 1942.Parer was tragically killed byJapanese gunfire in 1944, while coveringAmerican operations in Palau.
